What advice would you give to someone aspiring to a managerial role?
My advice to someone aspiring to a managerial role is to recognize that it’s a journey, not an immediate destination. You won’t know everything from the start, and that’s okay. Think of it as climbing a ladder, with each step bringing you more experience and knowledge. Pay attention to those who have walked the path before you—learn from their successes, and also from their mistakes. Keep an open mind, stay curious, and take notes on what works and what doesn’t. Every step you take helps you grow as a leader, enjoy the ride.
How do you measure success in your position?
One way I measure success is by the satisfaction of the team—when everyone comes together and can truly appreciate the work they've accomplished. It’s also evident when people seek your input and value your perspective. On a personal level, success is when you feel appreciated by your team, even if it’s not every single day. Most importantly, success is when you wake up excited to go to work, knowing you're part of something meaningful and important.
How do you build and maintain relationships with stakeholders and partners?
I believe strong relationships are built on trust, and trust takes time to develop. It starts with being honest and transparent—looking people in the eye and clearly communicating what you plan to do and how you’ll achieve it, then following through. This applies not only to stakeholders and partners, but also to the people you work with and lead. Building relationships also involves actively listening—truly understanding where others are coming from and where they’re headed. We can learn so much simply by listening. By collaborating and working through challenges together, we ensure success in the end.
How do you maintain a work-life balance?
I do the best I can to maintain a balance between work and life, recognizing that both require energy and focused attention on being successful. Being committed to both work and home means staying intentional about finding that balance. It’s important to set boundaries, prioritize self-care, and make time for the people and activities that recharge you. Achieving work-life balance is key to staying fulfilled and productive both at work and home life. I enjoy sports, I am on a bowling league and have been for decades also watching the Hokies play, in person when I can and my husband and I watch sports on TV at home as much as we can. Fixing meals and trying new recipes keeps me busy. Again, balance is essential, so enjoy success and learn from each experience.
