November Spotlight

Debra Young

Susan Olmstead, Program Support Technician, Hokie Passport

How long have you served at VT in your current role?

I’ve been with Hokie Passport Services since the end of 2004, and have been working primarily with electronic door access for about 10 years.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I still love the customer facing aspects of what we do at Hokie Passport. I enjoy helping all of our patrons, from students, to faculty, to facilities personnel. Watching incoming freshmen move onto campus and validating their IDs is particularly fun and an exciting time to work here.

What is your hometown?

I consider Christiansburg my hometown, although I lived other places beforehand. My dad was in the Navy, and after I was born, we moved from NC, to FL, to CA, before he retired in 1991, and we moved to the Lynchburg area where my mom was from. We ended up in Christiansburg, where both of my parents were employed by Virginia Tech!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Do I have to pick just one? I would love to travel all over the world, but I’d probably start in Italy. My dream is to eat and drink and explore my way through Europe, seeing everything from small towns and cobblestone streets, to castles and ruins.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

Teleportation.
