How long have you worked at Virginia Tech?

My first job with the university was in the summer of 1999 while I was attending summer sessions. I was hired as a part-time database programmer. So technically, it has been 26 years, but I began my part-time employment with Hokie Passport in 2004. A friend asked me to work orientation with Hokie Passport. It was supposed to be just a few weeks in July, but that began a wonderful collaboration that lasted 18 more years.

During that time, I also worked as a freelance software developer for other departments, including Environmental Health and Safety, Pamplin, the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, and others. I accepted a full-time position with Hokie Passport in 2022 when another team member announced her retirement.

It’s been an interesting path to this point, but Hokie Passport has been a wonderful place to work the entire time.

What is your favorite building or area on the Virginia Tech campus?

My favorite place on campus is Slusher Beach. I’m not sure if it’s still called that, but the quad between Slusher and Campbell Hall was instrumental in the friendships I formed my freshman year. Every time I walk through, I’m reminded of fun times and amazing people who helped shape the man I am today.

I also love Smithfield Plantation, which served as a de facto dog park for many years. In 2005, I planted a weeping willow near the cross country finish line to memorialize my Siberian Husky, who spent countless hours there with me.

I’ll give an honorable mention to the Camperdown Elm tree outside Newman Library. I’ve always thought it was a really cool-looking tree.

Who’s the most famous person you have ever met?

The most famous person I’ve ever met is Andrew Levitt, who is more commonly known as Nina West, a drag queen from Columbus, Ohio. I attended the wedding of another Hokie alum, and Andrew was also in the wedding party. This was before Nina’s national exposure on RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2019. Andrew is charming, hilarious, and a wonderful performer. I wasn’t surprised at all when Nina gained millions of fans after appearing on the show.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

The best piece of advice I’ve ever received is, “Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about.” Robin Williams is credited with popularizing the quote, but it’s likely as old as Plato or Aristotle. It reminds me to always be kind to others and to consider what might be happening outside my field of vision. I believe it’s important to remember that many situations aren’t about me. I’m not the main character—except today.

What is your favorite way to spend a weekend or a day off?

I’m old enough to enjoy a productive weekend, so I always want to accomplish something even when I’m not working. But I’d say I can do anything as long as it’s with friends. I love hiking, camping, and going to the lake in the summer. I also love traveling, no matter the destination. A quick trip to visit an old friend or having people return to Tech for a football game is exactly how I want to spend fall weekends. Experiencing great things in life is a joy, but having people you love to share them with is priceless.
